Help create a permanent landmark in Mira Mesa Community Park!

A new amphitheater-like sculpture is planned for Mira Mesa Community Park!

The steel sculpture will serve as a shaded festival stage, a picnic area, a location for events and classes, and a beautiful space for all to enjoy.

A mural representing Mira Mesa’s cultural diversity, wildlife, history, and community will be cut out of the steel structure. With the sun and moon shining through its cutout silhouettes, the amphitheater-like sculpture will illuminate Mira Mesa’s past, present, and future.

Local artists are seeking Mira Mesa students for a paid fellowship to co-design the sculptural mural! Working with the artists, students will research Mira Mesa’s natural and cultural landscape through lectures, photography, and collaboration.

Students will then participate in creative workshops to co-design the sculptural mural. Students interested in wildlife, environmental studies, history, art, architecture, urban planning, and journalism are encouraged to apply.

Mira Mesa Community Park Summer Workshop Series

Parkeology excavates social histories of civic space through collaborative art projects. We think public places like parks and museums are grounds for new forms of intimacy and storytelling.

This Summer, Parkeology is partnering with The AjA Project, to bring an all ages workshop series about the community and landscape of Mira Mesa. Together, we will create imagery for a permanent work of public art in Mira Mesa Community Park.

About the Mira Mesa Community Park Art Commission

This amphitheatre-like sculpture is a proposed public art project by Kate Clark, lead artist of Parkeology. Kate has been commissioned by the City of San Diego to create a site-specific artwork for the Phase II improvements to Mira Mesa Community Park.

Mira Mesa Community Park is home to a wealth of festivals and social gatherings that reflect the diverse culture of Mira Mesa, including Diwali, Tết, Holi, Fourth of July, and The Filipino Sun Festival. Weekend birthday parties, barbecues, and sports activities keep the park well used by visitors of all ages throughout the year. This amphitheatre-like sculpture will serve as another site for parties, workshops, relaxation and play.

Through community workshops, we will create a library of images important to the cultural diversity, wildlife, history, and communities of Mira Mesa. This imagery will be collaged, combined, and cut out of the 1” steel plate, which will form the amphitheater-like sculpture. On sunny days, these cut-out shapes will cast shadows on the park and people.  At night, this amphitheatre-like space will glow with LED lights. This project will be located between the two playgrounds, next to the Mira Mesa Recreation Center.
