Civil Liberties

How did the civil liberties of a community come to be violated under U.S Executive Order 9066? The AjA Project partnered with Mid-City CAN in 2023 for the third iteration of the Civil Liberties Project, a program rooted in studying the social and political context of Japanese-American Incarceration history in the United States. Field trips to the Japanese American National Museum (JANM) in LA, as well as to the local Japanese American Historical Society of San Diego (JAHSSD) provided our youth an opportunity to explore history through its archives. We reflected on this history further through various educational and multimedia art workshops, where the youth developed their own projects connecting the “parallel realities” of the past and present. The program extended into another fellowship in the fall, where three young fellows are using their knowledge from the summer to relate this history into the local issues of San Diego.
